Auction of Grateful Dead memorabilia brings in $1.1 million
Grateful Dead fans, who have a tough time letting go, were grateful for the chance to shell out big bucks today in San Francisco for what less enlightened people would call, well, junk.
It wasn’t junk, said fans of the defunct rock group. Not hardly.
The stuff on the auction block might look like empty speaker boxes, corroded guitar strings and funky old steamer trunks, but it constituted the genuine and authentic castoffs of the great Jerry Garcia.
So the bidding started high, and it went higher.
One of the empty speaker boxes sold for $1,680. Other empty boxes sold for $1,200 and $900. In the 1970s, they had held speakers in the band’s enormous Wall of Sound concert loudspeaker system, but the speakers themselves were long gone.

Judge suspends actor Hasselhoff’s visiting rights
A Los Angeles judge on Monday suspended former “Baywatch” star David Hasselhoff’s visitation rights with his two teenage daughters pending further review of a videotape believed made by one of the girls showing the actor drunk.
The order by Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas will be in effect until at least May 21 when another hearing on the matter is scheduled.
Hasselhoff, who was not in court for Monday’s hearing, admitted last week that he had struggled to overcome alcoholism after the videotape emerged showing him drunk.
The videotape, believed to have been taken by his 16-year-old daughter Taylor Ann three months ago, was aired online and on several TV channels. It showed Hasselhoff dressed in blue jeans and no shirt lying on the floor struggling to eat a hamburger.

Paris Hilton Sentenced to 45 Days in Jail
Paris Hilton must serve 45 days in jail for violating her probation by driving without a valid license.
Handing down the decision May 4, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer ruled the 26-year-old celebrity heiress must turn herself in by June 5.
A visibly shocked and tearful Hilton called the decision “cruel and unwarranted.” She subsequently fired her spokesman, veteran publicist Elliot Mintz. At the hearing, Hilton unsuccessfully argued Mintz had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons.

DJ Drama May Lose His Name, But He’ll Always Have Outkast
All DJ Drama can do is laugh it off and move on. He’s come across another obstacle in his career: The mixtape king has to legally change his well-known moniker because as it happens, a little-known spinner out of Chicago has the rights to the name.
“You can Google for 400 pages and you wouldn’t see anything about this guy,” the Drama we know said recently. “It’s all good, though. I’ve been through so much already — this is not a big deal. Some of the greats have had to go through things like this. I guess I’ll just Notorious B.I.G. the game. I’ll probably change my name to Dram or Dramatic and just keep it moving. The people know who the real DJ Drama is, though.”
