Ford Mustang Cobra Jet – Sport

The off-the-shelf drag car: Want to burn up the quarter-mile? Don’t build a car. Just visit your local dealer.

BY JERRY GARRETT

Ford Mustang Cobra Jet - Sport

She was young, cute, built, and knew it—poured into tight-fitting jeans and an even tighter top. And she wanted to strike a pose. She sidled up next to a new Ford Mustang Cobra Jet drag car, arched her back, hand on hip, tilted her head and smiled with a little smirk while her male companion snapped a photo.

“It was like one of those classic, old-time drag-racing poses, like Linda Vaughn in the 1960s,” says Jesse Kershaw from Ford Racing’s Performance Group. “It was great seeing a young couple, the kind you haven’t seen down in the Sportsman pits all that much in recent years, checking out the cars. Maybe we’re doing something that’ll get young people interested and involved in Sportsman racing again.”

Drag-racing old-timers will recall that in the late 1960s, Detroit’s Big Four automakers ruled America’s quarter-miles. Each of the factories built cars made especially for drag racing—the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt and 428 Cobra Jet Mustang, Chevrolet’s Z11 427, Pontiac’s Catalina with the “Swiss cheese” frame holes, the Hemi ’Cuda and Challenger from Mopar, and the COPO Camaro. Even little American Motors had the AMX. From about 1963 through 1969, these drag-pack specials engaged in an ever escalating horsepower war of historic proportions. By the early 1970s, though, factory interest in the horsepower party quickly wound down because of tougher emissions and safety standards, spiking insurance premiums, and the Arab oil embargo.

2010 Toyota Prius

The top-selling hybrid tops 50 mpg.

BY PATRICK BEDARD

2010 Toyota Prius

If the Toyota Prius is about sending messages—and even some owners agree that it is—then this new, third-generation model speaks through a bullhorn. Ignore this if you can: 51 mpg city, 48 highway, and 50 combined for the official EPA mileage ratings.

Fifty mpg! Free hugs at Whole Foods, no limit, while they last.

The big five-oh ekes out a clear margin over the old Prius (48, 45, and 46) and leaves Honda’s new Insight hybrid back in the shadows (40, 43, and 41). Good enough for its position as the “most affordable hybrid,” but no high-fives.

Maybe the saints of old had to flagellate themselves to show their piety, but messaging by Prius is as soothing as silk underwear. Interior space for passengers and cargo is up by five cubic feet, Toyota says, though the car itself is longer and wider by less than an inch each way.

2010 Nissan GT-R laps Nurburgring in 7:27.56, still looking to beat Corvette ZR1

2010 Nissan GT-R

As reported last month, Nissan was to head back to the Nurburgring with the 2010 GT-R and the GT-R SpecV to break its own and other records at the famous German track.

According to EVO, the Nissan GT-R has allegedly broken its previous record of 7:29. Piloted by Toshio Suzuki, former F1 driver and Nissan’s Chief Test Driver, the 2010 model year lapped the Nordschleife in 7:27.56.

However that time is still slower than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s 7:26.40 so Suzuki will be giving it another shot in a few days. We’re guessing Nissan will officially release all the figures once it’s satisfied with its lap times. Can’t wait to see the GT-R SpecV’s numbers.
