Q&A With RJD2
After several successful recordings that relied heavily on samples from records and other sources, indie hip-hop producer RJD2 found himself at a crossroads in his career. His cache of samples, amassed from years of collecting records, was severely depleted and he was faced with committing serious time to digging for more vinyl gems or venturing into new musical territory. He chose the latter. The result: His latest LP The Third Hand, which features live instruments and vocals (his own) on almost every track.
RJD2 returns to San Francisco on May 15 for a concert at Mezzanine. He spoke with SF Station during a phone interview from the road in Ohio, where he was raised.

Execs sound a call to clean up hip-hop
Hip-hop leaders yesterday called on the music industry and broadcast outlets to voluntarily follow a new, tougher standard for language in the wake of the controversy about rappers’ use of lyrics demeaning to women that followed former talk show host Don Imus’ racist and sexist insults to the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
Under the new guidelines, announced by the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, the words “bitch” and “ho” would no longer be broadcast on radio or TV, and would also be removed from the “clean” versions of CDs, along with the N-word. A coalition on broadcast standards is also planned to create guidelines for visual content.

Turning Up the Heat on the conversation about Hip Hop
So I pick up the latest issue of Rolling Out Magazine. Big up to black indie press. I go to a page where it says, Spring Fest Miami 2007, hosted by AG Entertainment and Radio One. These are the acts performing live according to the listing:
YOUNG JOC, Boy N DA Hood, RIC ROSS, YING YANG TWINS, TRICK DADDY, D4L, CRIME MOB, DJ UNK, JIM JONES, MIKE JONES, LIL SCRAPPY, LLOYD, RICH BOY, JIBBS, RASHEEDA, CANTON JONES, MIMS, YOUNG BUCK AND G UNIT, BLAK JAK, T PAIN, SLIM THUG AND MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED
With all this talking closed doors, in public, on the radio, internet, and news about what’s right or what’s wrong with Hip Hop and the messages that are being said against women, gun violence, drugs etc. RADIO ONE, owned by a black woman, Kathy Hughes, co signs for this type of concert where many if not most of these artist are talking about the very things “so-called” people want to be changed in Hip Hop.

Lil Romeo planning to jump from hip-hop stage to USC basketball court
Lil’ Romeo says he’s bound for the University of Southern California, where, if all goes according to plan, the teenage hip-hop star would become Romeo Miller, basketball player.
The high-school junior has committed to playing basketball for the Trojans in 2008, Dave Lindsay, a spokesman for Lil’ Romeo’s online label, UrbanDigital Records, said Friday.
USC spokesman Dave Tuttle declined to confirm or deny the report, but said the university hasn’t received a signed letter of intent from the young rapper.
“We can’t comment on any recruits or potential recruits until we have a signed letter. That’s an NCAA rule,” Tuttle said.

Hip Hop is Dead, but Nas is alive and well
In 1994, a spry 20-year-old from Queens released Illmatic, a hip-hop landmark that would change rap music forever. Now 12 years later, Nas’ vividly imaginative narratives have withstood the test of time, though the hip-hop landscape has drastically changed.
